Way back in the sixties of the last century, the “Life” magazine stated that Rio’s favellae were “wonderful in their own way, with their fragile and melancholic beauty. Light and somewhat elegant structures find themselves on the slopes like birds’ nests...”. For the first time the illegal settlements were plotted on the city’s map in 1994. The largest of them, Rosynia, with over 100 000 inhabitants, was formalized and received official status of the city’s district. Today it is not unusual to see guided tours here. Long ago the favellae have lost status of the poverty symbol, and now become a unique brand of Brazil as well as soccer game and carnivals. “Harmony of Chaos” is the best description of the modern favellae.

From the earliest times Armenian cultural life has cooperated with the Kingdom of Aksum, the first Christian state in Africa. It suffices to take a look at Ethiopian and Armenian Alphabets, miniature paintings in Matenadaran and the Museum of Addis Ababa, Armenian khachkars and giant basaltic stelae of Aksum. National complex in Ethiopia is a synthesis and modern incorporation of architectural arts between two far away countries, the countries located at two different continents, the countries that have very much in common.

In Middle Ages Spain became a pioneer country in such architectural styles as “isabellino” (in name of Isabella I , Queen of Castile and León), “plateresco” (Spanish – hammered, ornamental), baroque “churrigueresco” and ascetic “herreresco” (named by architects Jose Churriguero and Jose Herrer), Catalan modern by Antonio Gaudi. So, the Recreation module of the Spanish City of the World is an up-to-date version of the “mudejar style”. The World-Expo 2010 held in Shanghai with 192 exhibiting countries ended on October 31, 2010. The Armenian Pavilion carried a unique idea – an idea of the Cities of the World, a new XXI century construction module! The idea was acknowledged as a “unique and the most meaningful”. The fact was also recorded that Armenia was the only participating country that not only demonstrated itself but proposed changes to the surrounding world. This perfectly corresponded to the main subject of the Expo – “Better city, Better life”. The concept inventor was Ashot Avetisian, an architect, and a group leader of the Armenian organizing committee at Expo-2010. He was the person we were talking to about the Armenian Pavilion and the City of the World Project.
